[TOP TEN TUESDAY] Backlist Books I want to read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

How it works:

That Artsy Reader Girl assigns each Tuesday a topic and then I have to post my top ten(or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list that fits that topic.

This week’s topic is

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

backlist is a list of older books available from a publisher, as opposed to titles newly published (sometimes known as the frontlist).

At the moment, I have over 200 unread books on my shelves and most definitely not all of them have been added in 2018 or have been a 2018 release. So that means I have a lot of ‘older’ books on my shelves, waiting to be read. So many, I should feel ashamed, lol. In some articles I publish, like the ABC book challenge, I talk about books on my tbr.

For this TTT article, I was thinking about creating a list of 10 books that have been on my tbr the longest – and of course that ultimately means they’re books that have been published way before 2018 so they’re definitely backlist books. Since I want to talk a bit more about the book and how it remained on my shelves unread for so long, I’ll be deciding if I want to still read it or maybe unhaul it. Here we go! I’ve only started using Goodreads actively in 2015 so I don’t know for sure which books I’ve had on my tbr before that so I’ll be focusing on the books I added to my shelves in 2015 and early 2016.

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson
(the Gold Seer trilogy #1)

I remember very well when I received this book years ago, right after it’s release. I even started reading it not long after that but somehow never finished reading it. In the meantime the trilogy is even completed I think? so it’s about damn time I start reading this book again and finish to see if I want to buy the rest of the series as well. I really hope I’m going to fall in love with this book again because I want to add the beautiful hardcover editions of book 2 and 3 to my collection as well, lol. The book was added to my shelves/tbr in September ’15.

the Crown by Kiera Cass
(The Selection #5)

I fell in love with the first three books. They were such fast-paced reads, so cute and heartwarming. When I read book 4, the Heir, I found it an entertaining read. I didn’t hate on the main character as so many others did, and found myself wanting to finish book 5 as well. Somehow I still haven’t read it – added the book to my shelves/tbr in October ’15.

Unchained by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Claiming to be a huge Armentrout fan and not having read all of her books already – FAIL. Unchained by Jen is one that has been on my shelves/tbr since November ’15, yikes. I have no frigging idea as to how I haven’t read it yet, lol. Especially since it’s a paranormal read and has Demon’s and Angels in it, which I love to read about so much! I love Jen’s writing in general, so why on Earth haven’t I finished reading this book yet? Sigh. This TTT is being brutal in confronting me how bad I’ve been, lol.

the Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
(The Raven Cycle #1)

Yikes, another one bites the dust. I have 7 Stiefvater books on my shelves for years now and still haven’t read a single one of them. At first, I stayed clear of the Raven Cycle books because of the enormous Hype. But I bought them anyway since the synopsis sounded so good. I’ve been wanting to start reading them for ages but somehow other books keep coming in between. I even added the Raven Boys to my tbr stack last month but still, I ended up reading other books – I’m such a failure…  The Raven Boys was added to my shelves/tbr in November ’15.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
(The Witchlands #1)

Another one I desperately wanted to have in my collection, with all intention of reading it asap, but still haven’t read. Added to my shelves/tbr in January ’16. But to be honest; witchy and magic reads are books I have to be in the right kind of mood for and somehow this one just hasn’t ‘called’ to me yet even though I was really excited about getting it back in 2016.

Paper Princess by Erin Watt
(the Royals #1)

I bought this book right after it’s release and this was before it got really hyped. I intended to read it soon, but then it got so hyped internationally but here in the Netherlands as well, that I kind of shoved it down the tbr stack, yikes haha. I believe it’s a book that has major dramatics in it, so I have to be in the rind kind of mood to read it. I don’t plan on getting rid of it since the synopsis still makes me want to read it, but I have no idea if I’ll get to it anytime soon though. This book was added to my shelves/tbr in April ’16.

Once upon a Dream by Liz Braswell
(Twisted Tales #3)

Back in 2016, I was one of those readers who became engrossed by re-tellings. Especially re-tellings about Disney stories. So, of course, I had to add this one to my shelves since I hadn’t come across many Sleeping Beauty re-tellings up to that point. The book was added to my shelves/tbr in June ’16 and even though I love reading re-tellings, I find myself being picky though of lately. I still haven’t finished reading a Sleeping Beauty re-telling so I’m definitely planning on doing so in the future.

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead
(Age of X #1)

Ever since reading Mead’s Vampire Academy series – which I became obsessed with – I’ve been wanting to read other books written by her as well. I decided to buy the first book in the Age of X series and somehow we’re now almost at the end of 2018 already and I still haven’t read it, sigh. The book was added to my shelves/tbr in June ’16.

Knife, Rebel & Arrow by R.J. Anderson
(Faery Rebels #1, #2 and #3)

I came across these books when I was at Waterstones in London back in 2016 and I fell in love with the stunning covers and synopsis of all three books right away. I was totally ready to read some more fairy books because I became obsessed with them. In the meantime, fast forward to November 2018, they haven’t been touched yet alongside some other fairy series I’ve added to my shelves in ’16 as well. This trilogy was added to my shelves/tbr in October ’16.

I decided to make a list of 10 because it’s impossible to list all of my 200+ physical tbr books in here haha. If you’re interested in being updated on my tbr books, you should check out my ABC BOOK CHALLENGE article in which I talk about my TBR books on a weekly base.

Have you read any of the books on my backlist books I still want to read-list? Love to hear what you thought of the book(s) then! Which backlist books do you still need to finish reading? Love hearing from you!

With Love,

    1. Ahh that makes me less excited to read the Crown haha. But since I’ve loved the first 4 books I feel like I own it to the series to finish all of them, lol. But I keep putting it off haha. Unchained… I’m really curious! It sounds like my kind of read but I just rather read series instead of stand alone when it comes to paranormal romance books, but we’ll see!

Great list! I just bought myself a copy of Truthwitch this past weekend after hearing so many good things about it, and I’m looking forward to starting a new series that’s slightly longer than a trilogy. 🙂 Walk on Earth a Stranger is one I need to get to soon, too, because I’ve owned it for years. I hope you enjoy all of these when you get to them!

  2. I haven’t read any of these – I’m so behind! I really want to read Walk the Earth a Stranger and The Selection series. I’ve heard a lot of negative things about The Selection, but I have a feeling I’ll really like it. I love fluffy books haha!

    My TTT post!

I’ve only read The Crown but all of these look lovely. I don’t mind The Heir and The Crown, but I personally felt everything was rushed in those two as compared to the original trilogy.

  4. Hahaha, I also only joined Goodreads in 2015 or 2016. So, that TBR wasn’t that helpful. I opted to just focus on horror books I should’ve read years ago. On your list, I only read the ‘The Selection series’ and I quite liked all books in the series for what they are (to me) – entertaining and fast reads, kinda like palate cleansers in between heavy books.

    1. I hope I can manage as well haha. Atm my reading pace is slower than a snail so I don’t even know if I’m able to finish my re-reads of Lady Midnight & Lord of Shadows before the release of Queen of Air and Darkness on December 4th, let alone read ‘new’ books.. so sad haha. I’m really curious about twuthwitch! I can’t believe it’s still on my tbr haha I should be ashamed of myself, lol.

    1. IKR, it was so hard to trim down this list so I thought I’d look up the books that have been on my tbr the longest – according to Goodreads which I’ve only been actively using since 2015. choosing 10 out of 200… impossible hahaha

    1. I’ve heard great things about it but some negative reviews as well. I’m really curious to see what I’ll think of it. It’s a book with drama from what I’ve understood and sometimes that’s just what I need haha. Hope you’re going to like it if you get around to reading it!

This is such a nice idea! I loved the Raven Cycle (I still need to read the last book though, haha), I recently discovered The Royals and I binge read all the 5 books in less than a week, they are so enjoyable haha, I think you’ll like them as well ❤

    1. Keep hearing only great things about the Raven Cycle! Maybe that’s why I also haven’t started reading the series yet because the same happend to me with the a darker shade of magic books and book 1 disappointed me a bit tbh haha. And whoa, all 5 of them in less than a week; nice haha! Everyone I know who has read them, said the same to me, lol.

    1. The thing about truthwitch is mostly that I really need to be in a specific mood to read a book that’s focusing on witches. I love witch reads in general, but haven’t been in the mood lately to pick up a book that’s focusing on that. If they appear as minor characters or one of the main characters with there being a lot of other characters being present as well, I like it more. So we’ll see how long it’ll take until I pick it up, lol. And I’ve been hearing only great things about The raven cycle books so far but I think that’s why I haven’t picked it up yet either haha I’m a bit skittish to start reading books that people are raving about since they often disappoint me then 😦 – this happened to me with a darker shade of magic for example and the cruel prince.

  6. Huh…I thought I was the last person to read the Raven Boys, but you’re the 3rd person to have it on their TTT backlist TBR. It was an excellent read… now I just have to dive into the rest of the series…

  7. Great post and a great list of books I just check out The Raven Boys from the library a couple of days ago and I can’t wait to read it soon because I heard many amazing things about it as well. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome post.
