[TOP TEN TUESDAY] Platonic Relationships In Books

Top Ten Tuesday is all about books – sometimes non bookish things – and a top 10 list. It was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

How it works:

That Artsy Reader Girl assigns each Tuesday a topic and then I have to post my top ten(or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list that fits that topic.

This week’s topic is

I LOVE reading about friendships in books and it’s sometimes even more important than a good romance I think haha. Over the years, I’ve come across many beautiful friendships and I am excited to gush to you about some of those.

It was really hard narrowing it down to ‘only’ 10 because there are so many more friendships I could talk about but okay, here we go 😉

| Will Herondale & James Carstairs |
from the Infernal Devices trilogy

Gods, I don’t know where to start, because talking about these characters has me tearing up, ALWAYS… But how could I not mention these two characters who own my heart and soul? They represent the meaning of Friendship down to its core in the very best way possible. Add in the fact that they’re also Parabatai and how all this intensifies everything… I’m just beyond words actually. Cassandra Clare’s creation of ‘Parabatai’ in the beloved shadow hunter world is so frigging awesome I think and it adds so much more to Will & Jem being ‘friends’ < being friends… this feels like it’s almost an insult because they are so much more; they are brothers in souls and I just can’t put into words how much love I have for this friendship. The love these two have for one another goes into infinity and beyond and has been written down to perfection. Thinking and reading about these two has me tearing up every single time.

“When you walk in the world,
I will be the light at your side.

The ground steady under your feet.
The force that drives the sword in your hand.
We are bound, beyond the oath.”

| Harry, Ron and Hermione |
from the Harry Potter series

Because how could I not mention these three friends? Their friendship is what made these books so insanely awesome I think. These three characters complement one another to perfection I think. They all have their flaws, and them being together makes them unstoppable. So much love for them!

“We’re with you whatever happens.”

| Karou & Zuzana |
from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy

These two are definitely one of my all-time favorite characters that have a great friendship going on. I love love love their interaction in the books and how fierce-some our little Zuzana is. They both go above and beyond for each other and I can’t get enough of reading about them. Their friendship is a much loved element that’s present in these books to me. It was just really beautifully represented I think. And I laughed my ass off so hard with these two haha #friendshipGOALS

“You are a conniving, deceitful hussy. I stand in awe.”
“You’re sitting.”
“I sit in awe.”

“We’re playing Three Wishes,” she told her friend. “Cake, hot bath, soft bed. How about you?”
“World peace,” said Karou.
Zuzana rolled her eyes. “Yes, Saint Karou.”
“Cure for cancer,” Karou went on. “And unicorns for all.”
“Bluh. Nothing ruins Three Wishes like altruism. It has to be something for yourself, and if it doesn’t include food, it’s a lie.”
“I did include food. I said unicorns, didn’t I?”
“Mmm. You’re craving unicorn, are you?” Zuzana’s brow furrowed. “Wait. Do they have those here?”
“Alas, no.”
“They did,” said Mik. “But Karou ate them all.”
“I am a voracious unicorn predator.”

| Lucien & Feyre |
a Court of Thorns and Roses series

Even though Lucien has made some bad decisions and some of you might put down a ? as to why I’d choose these two in the first place, since his decisions impacted this friendship badly in the long run, I still feel like this is one of those precious friendships I’ll treasure forever. Because I think the foundation of this friendship is still solid, when looking past the hurt. I can’t really put into words as to why I feel so strongly about these two being friends, but I just feel like these two characters match as being friends perfectly. When reading a Court of Thorns and Roses, I was so giddy with happiness of them finding each other. I cannot wait to read more scenes with them, hopefully, and I also really hope their friendship gets rekindled in the future but we’ll have to wait and see if there’s room being made for that in the upcoming books.

“Do you ever stop being so serious and dull?”
“Do you ever stop being such a prick?” I snapped back.
Dead—really, truly, I should have been dead for that.
But Lucien grinned at me. “Much better.”

| Elena & Illium |
from the Guild Hunter series

THESE TWO! They embody the friendship thing perfectly. I loved seeing them together right from the start so much. I live for this friendship, sigh. And in the meantime, we’re 11 books into the series, and their friendship has grown so much more since the beginning. It has so much depth and love and understanding. I also love seeing Raphael – Elena’s other half  – being lenient towards Illium by granting him permission to be much closer to Elena as any Archangel normally would allow when someone’s so close to a consort, like even touching each other’s wings and stuff like that. Ok, I stop bothering you with details, lol. But he understands their friendship and encourages it even more, and that’s just really beautiful to see as well I think.

Raphael & Illium talking, early on in the series, when the friendship was still young:

Even as he spoke, silver blue flashed on her other side and then Illium was standing beside her, his wing touching Elena’s in an intimacy that made Raphael raise an eyebrow.
Illium’s lip curved into a wicked smile that did little to hide the intensity of his emotions.
“I would not watch you die again, Sire.”
His veins stood out against his sin as he gripped the wrist of one hand with the other.
Raphael met those eyes of gold that had stood beside him for centuries.
“If I had done so, I would have gone knowing you would keep my heart safe.”
Illium’s gaze went to Elena. “Always.”

| Frodo & Sam |
from the Lord of the Rings

This is definitely one of those epic friendships I just couldn’t pass up on mentioning even though there are many more awesome friendships to be found in these books. I think a lot of people would agree with me on it being a good thing that this one made the list, or not? Frodo and Sam’s friendship gets tested to the max and it comes out of battle and darkness stronger, and I love that. I loved reading about them and loved seeing their friendship on the big screen as well. This is a friendship that goes above and beyond and runs so deep in the end that’ll remains rooted inside our hearts for always. It just really deserved to be mentioned I think! I love friendships like these, that are forged through battle and darkness and eventually last a lifetime.

“Sam: I wonder if we’ll ever be put into songs or tales. Frodo: [turns around] What? Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, ‘Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring.’ And they’ll say ‘Yes, that’s one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn’t he, Dad?’ ‘Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that’s saying a lot.’ Frodo: [continue walking] You’ve left out one of the chief characters – Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. [stops and turns to Sam] Frodo: Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam. Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn’t make fun; I was being serious. Frodo: So was I. [they continue to walk] Sam: Samwise the Brave…”

“I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.”

| Aelin & Lysandra |
Throne of Glass series

I think this is one of, if not THE, best friendships to be found in the entire series. Aelin & Lysandra have both come a long and hard way when we look back to when they lived with Arobyn and were enemies of one another really haha. When they’d never thought it possible beforehand of them becoming friends, their friendship is eventually one that thrive so much throughout the series and develops into one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever come across. The lengths as to what Lysandra goes to for example, to help out her friend is beyond comprehension. It’s all so tragic and beautiful to read at the same time. I love it so much that these two characters formed such a strong and beautiful friendship because they are both so deserving of having a friendship like this; going above and beyond for each other, despite the hardships of what they had to do sometimes not only for their world in general but to the people around them who they love so much as well, and always being able to rely upon one another when it matters most, without wavering.

“You bought chocolate―as far as I’m concerned, you’re my new favorite person.”

“Even before I knew who you were, Aelin, I knew that what you were working toward.
It was worth it.”
“What is?” Her throat tightened.
“A world where people like me don’t have to hide.”

| Chaol & Dorian |
Throne of Glass series

And how could I mention Aelin & Lysandra from the Throne of Glass series but not give Chaol and Dorian a place in this list? Right, I couldn’t do that obviously! This friendship was already a thing right from the start, when we got to meet them in Throne of Glass book 1. But this friendship has since then endured so much heartbreak, pain and loss throughout the entire series and still they both came out stronger of it and their friendship as well. They are much like Will & Jem I believe; brothers in souls and going above and beyond to keep their friendship alive. Nothing is too much and they’d die for each other, which especially Chaol has proven many times over. I think his devotion to Dorian is beyond words and their unconditionally love for one another runs so deep and steadfast and I think Sarah J. Maas did such an amazing job adding this friendship to the series and having it developed into so much more than ‘just’ a friendship. This is #Bromance written to perfection!

“He looked at his friend, perhaps for the last time, and said what he had always known, from the moment they’d met, when he’d understood that the prince was his brother in soul. “I love you.”

| Eragon & Saphira |
The Inheritance Cycle

Okay, so this isn’t a friendship between two humans but one between a Rider and his Dragon. Eragon and Saphira have established such a beautiful bond and I loved reading about these two. I think this is such a beautiful platonic relationship and I love how they can share thoughts together for example. It gives so much more depth into a relationship I think. You never really feel alone this way. These two survive so much together throughout time and joining them on their quests was such a joy! I loved seeing the bond they created from the moment she hatched form into a really strong one over time.

“Eragon went to see the dragon for the first time since it had spoken to him. He approached apprehensively, aware now that it was an equal.
“Is that all you can say?” he snapped.
His eyes widened at the unexpected reply, and he sat down roughly.
Now it has a sense of humor. What next?

| Harper, Rhen & Grey |
a Curse so Dark and Lonely

There are actually two friendships in this book I really want to talk about. There’s one between Rhen and Grey and then there’s one forming between Harper and Grey. I loved Rhen & Grey’s friendship in this book; It was obvious that after all those years spending time together, trying to get rid of the curse, that their relationship would go beyond ‘duty’ at one point and that they’d started forming a stable friendship over the years because they really only did have each other for a long while. Until Harper appears in their world.

I loved Harper’s forming friendship with Grey maybe just as much as I did her developing a romantic relationship with Rhen or reading about Rhen and Grey’s friendship. Grey is so easy to love guys, gah. He’s super loyal to Rhen and I respect him for it. He really pushes himself into the background while he deserves to be loved just as much as Rhen does and Harper for that matter. I came to care so much for this specific character. He really was the glue that kept these three together you know?  Over time, he becomes a really good friend to Harper and he’s a bit more open and ‘free’ when he’s with her which I loved.

I loved seeing these different sort of friendships being present in this book, revolving around these three characters. These friendships were just as important to me as the romantic relationship developing between Harper & Rhen. This book is definitely deserving of a spot in this list!

“Are you prepared to die, Grey?” I demand.
“Because that is all that exists at the end of this path. I am sure of it. This was never a curse to be broken. This is a death sentence. The true curse has been the thought that we might find escape.”
His eyes flash with something close to defiance. “We may yet escape.”
“If I have not succeeded by the time signs of the change begin to appear, you will do this, Grey. It may happen quickly, so I am giving you this order now. I will release you from your oath.”

What are some of your most favorite friendships in books? Love to hear from you! And if you’ve published a Top Ten Tuesday list of your own today, let me know and I’ll definitely leave a reply over at your blog as well. Thanks for reading!

With Love,
Melissa ♥

    1. haha yeah I think a lot of people gave up on the Feyre/Lucien friendship but I keep hoping! I love Lucien so much and I thing he deserves all the love and friendships. He was only ever loyal to Tamlin and I respect him being loyal to Tamlin, even though he made some bad decisions regarding his friendship with Feyre and all that. Really hope to see more of them in the future.
