[UNBOXING] Illumicrate November 2018: Clever Ruse

Earlier today I received my November Illumicrate box, so it’s time for me to share my unboxing.

Illumicrate is a book box company located in the UK. I’ve been ordering boxes from them since October ’17 and so far they haven’t disappointed me yet with their choice in books and merchandise. The books I’ve read so far have been 5-star reads to me, so I can’t wait to see if the books in this month’s box are going to be just as good when I get around to read them.

Illumicrate doesn’t send out boxes on a monthly base but they do so once every quarter, so that’s 4 boxes a year, which is perfect to me. They also do special edition boxes, virtual signings every now and then and they have a new pin subscription – they work together with FableAndBlack on this. Definitely go check out their website/social media if you’re curious to know more about this company!

The theme for this box was

Let’s start with the extra’s in this box. There’s a stunning Poppy War bookmark inside this box. I haven’t bought this book yet but it is on my wishlist, so I’m going to read it someday and I have this stunning bookmark then to accompany me while reading the book.

There’s also a three chapters sampler for this Mortal Coil. You can scan the QR code and then you can listen to the first three chapters. I’m not one who’s into audiobooks, so if you would like to listen to this sampler, let me know and I’ll send you the QR code! Inside the blue envelope there are some papers to be found and with these papers you can create your own DNA origami. This is definitely something I’m going to try to make.

inspired by the Night Circus and Caraval

I haven’t gotten or bought that many banners yet so receiving this one that’s inspired by the Night Circus and Caraval is quite awesome. I haven’t read the books yet, but the design is just stunning enough on its own I think. I’m definitely going to find a spot to hang this somewhere on a wall or on one of my shelves! created by @Illumicrate

A new woodmark to add to my collection, YES! I haven’t read Warcross yet – it’s on my shelf – but I am so happy with this woodmark. I love the design and the rainbow coloring. Can’t wait to read this book now while using this bookmark. The bookmark is really sturdy and of good quality I think. Artwork by @chattynora

okay, I am really in love with the artwork on this item. Like, REALLY IN LOVE. Look at Lara Jean and Peter!!!! Soooo cute together! I also really love this item, because it’s an item they haven’t included in a box before. And I also haven’t seen it in that many other book boxes out there either so that’s pretty cool.

But, I’m going to be honest; I don’t think I’ll use it anytime soon. It’s stunning enough to just showcase on my shelves of course, so there’s that. But when I showed it to a friend of mine, Isa, she was so frigging excited about this item and bummed out that she couldn’t buy it anywhere since it’s an exclusive item and all that, that I decided to gift it to her. I don’t often travel or anything while taking a warm drink with me, and I know Isa does this more often than me haha, so it’s just meant to be I guess:) I’m sure she’s going to make great use of it! So this one is going to be put into Isa’s Christmas envelop that’s going her way soon. Have fun with it lovely! Artwork by @gicatam

*heavy breathing* You guys, I can’t even… I’m so in love with this item! I love @fableandblack ‘s designs in general, and this Stag design of the Throne of Glass series is just everything. I can’t wait to go outside and wear this beauty with pride. Definitely one of my favorite items inside this box!

  • SCARF,
    Inspired by Mulan

I’ve secretly developed a scarf addiction and lay collection keeps growing. Getting to add this one to my collection makes me so happy. Who doesn’t love a warrior girl like Mulan? And who wouldn’t love receiving a scarf with a design this stunning?! Exactly. I love the coloring and the artwork itself so so much. I mean, look at the detailing of all of it. I just love everything about this. I love the texture of the material – it’s so soft! – and can’t wait to use it. I’d also love to showcase it on a wall someday in the future when I have a library room. Artwork by @ruan0v0

  • BOOK #1:

wild magicklaar

I was so excited to find out which 2nd book they added to the box and I’m pleasantly surprised to see it’s this one! And it comes with an exclusive cover and I am so in love with this cover design! I hadn’t heard of this series before until very recently and the synopsis of this book sounds so good! Can’t wait to dive into this story, hopefully soon!

Daine has been alone in the wild for a long time. A little feral and running from a tragedy that drove her from home. Daine’s strange affinity with animals has kept her alive.

This ‘knack’ leads Daine into service with the Queen’s Riders when she meets Onua Chamtong at market. Finally it seems as though she is leaving a life of uncertainty and danger behind. But their journey to deliver horses back to the capital is interrupted when nightmarish creatures drop from the sky, chasing a hawk. They herald the start of a new life for Daine- one filled with adventure, romance, war, and more magic than she could ever have imagined.

For the hawk is more than what it appears to be, and so is Daine. She must learn to master her powers quickly if she is to survive… for gods and monsters are beginning to roam the land once more.

  • BOOK #2:

This book was what the box was all about. I’ve read some mixed reviews on this book, but I am excited to see what I’ll think of it since I really like the synopsis and the fact that it’s a stand alone and that it has Asian elements, since it’s an Asian inspired fantasy. It came with a letter from the author, a signed bookplate and it’s an exclusive edition. That means it has an exclusive cover – the original one is with blue coloring for example. Stunning as well, but I love all of the RED coloring on this jacket and naked hardback – and black sprayed edges. I’m in love! Really happy to having received this book!

In a palace of illusions, nothing is what it seems.

Each generation, a competition is held to find the next empress of Honoku. The rules are simple. Survive the palace’s enchanted seasonal rooms. Conquer Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Marry the prince. All are eligible to compete—all except yōkai, supernatural monsters and spirits whom the human emperor is determined to enslave and destroy.

Mari has spent a lifetime training to become empress. Winning should be easy. And it would be, if she weren’t hiding a dangerous secret. Mari is a yōkai with the ability to transform into a terrifying monster. If discovered, her life will be forfeit. As she struggles to keep her true identity hidden, Mari’s fate collides with that of Taro, the prince who has no desire to inherit the imperial throne, and Akira, a half-human, half-yōkai outcast.

Torn between duty and love, loyalty and betrayal, vengeance and forgiveness, the choices of Mari, Taro, and Akira will decide the fate of Honoku in this beautifully written, edge-of-your-seat YA fantasy.

Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised by the content of this box. I love all of the items. They’re of amazing quality, the artwork/desings are stunning and I think it’s pretty awesome there are two books inside. And then both books come with exclusive covers, and the the main book is also a stunning hardcover edition that came with signed bookplate and letter from the author. I just love receiving exclusive editions and it’s a book that I was already curious about so that’s just win-win for me. Illumicrate has put together a really awesome box yet again in my opinion and I’m already looking forward to seeing what the next theme is about!

Did you buy/receive any book boxes in November? Are you looking forward to receiving a box in December maybe? Love to hear from you and thank you so much for reading!

With love, always,
Melissa ♥

    1. So far, I’m always really satisfied with the content of their boxes. And their special edition boxes are to die for! The Starfall box for example – the a court of thorns and roses inspired one – was definitely one of The best boxes I ever received for example. But I normally really love their choice of book(s) in their regular boxes for example and the merchandise is mostly always really awesome as well – and most of the items are always exclusive which I really like too. That makes them even more unique. And it isn’t so money consuming since it doesn’t come every month haha.

    1. there are a lot of boxes out there and most of them are sold from the US. There are box companies who focus on specific genres like Young adult, fiction, romance and so on so it depends on what you’re interested in I guess :). But I’m not familiar with them all. There are also merchandise boxes that don’t have a book in them. I always love those as well.
