[BEAT THE BACKLIST 2019] My TBR list, part 1

Last week, I published an article about the Beat the Backlist challenge, hosted by Novel Knight, in which I announced that I was going to participate in 2019’s challenge. Today I want to share the books I’m going to put on the tbr for this challenge.

I decided to split the list in 2 categories and create a list of 40 books:
– 20 books that were published in 2018
– 20 books that were published prior to 2018

This, so that I can tackle some of the older released books as well since I kind of failed at finishing my 2018 beat the backlist challenge and there are still a lot of prior to 2018 released books on my tbr at the moment hihi.

Today, I’ll share with you one of two lists, starting with the 2018 releases that I want to read for Beat the Backlist.

| The 2018 released books I want to read |

◊ Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Marsh Glenn

A book I was so excited about before its release but somehow I just haven’t felt excited to pick it up when it got here haha. I keep hearing good things about it, but we’ll see whenever I get in the mood to read it. I still want to read it though, so putting it up on this tbr list is just a good motivator I guess.

◊ Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

I received this book for my birthday from a friend. I hadn’t bought it myself yet because of the hype. I’m always skittish about hyped books. But the synopsis does look goed and this particular friend who bought it, loves it a lot as well and we normally have quite a similar taste when it comes to books, so I’m really curious now! Definitely one I’m planning to read in 2019, so it’d be a perfect one to add to this tbr list.

◊ Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas

I seriously cannot believe I have an unread Sarah J. Maas book on my shelves. It feels like blasphemy really, lol. And aside from Catwoman being written by Sarah, it’s also a superhero retelling about badass woman, which I am so supportive of. So really, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE I HAVEN’T READ IT YET? You tell me, lol… So yeah; 2019!

◊ a Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir

A series I’ve been so so sooo in love with right from the start. I think book 1 and 2 are truly epic books and one of my all-time favorites. So how come I still haven’t read book 3 yet? I seriously don’t understand myself sometimes haha. I was in the mood of reading it in November, but I didn’t want to take this huge hardcover with me to Disney at the time, so I put it aside again, hoping to get around to reading it in December or so. But now I’m not really in the mood anymore, lol. 2019 it is then!

◊ Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

One of my most highly anticipated 2018 releases of one of my most favorite authors ever and I’m still not finished reading it. Yikes, this hurt… the Remnant Chronicles are one of my all time favorite books and this spin-off was one I was so frigging excited about. So of course, I put in a preorder and I started reading it right away but I just couldn’t get in the mood. I feel so frustrated with myself at times like that. So I’m going to start anew with this one in 2019.

◊ Ash Princess by Laura Sebastien

A book that had a great synopsis and one I was really looking forward to receiving prior to its release. In the meantime, we’re months after its release and I still haven’t picked it up yet, yikes. Still really excited to read it though, so it’s a perfect one to add to the beat the backlist tbr.

◊ Furyborn by Claire Legrand

I should be ashamed of myself. I received an e-arc almost a year prior to the release of this book. I started reading it on my Kindle and really looooved what I’ve read so far. But then I got into a kindle-reading-slump (Yep, from time to time I just can’t focus reading digital books) and put it aside again. In the meantime, it’s many months after the release of this book. I preordered a copy – a stunning HC with deckled edges – because I just knew when reading the arc that I needed this epic book on my shelves, but somehow I never got around to finish it yet! So, I’m planning to start anew in 2019 with this one and hopefully finish it! I have a feeling this is going to be a favorite book of mine, so I can’t wait to see if I’m right.

◊ the Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross

This stunning hardcover – with deckled edges!!! – had a major discount over at amazon.de a couple of months ago – I believe I purchased it for not even €5! – and I couldn’t resist buying it because the synopsis sounded awesome. At the time, I hadn’t seen much of this book yet on social media and other bookish platforms. Now, months later, I see more and more people reading the book and loving it. Can’t wait to find out for myself what I’ll think of it.

◊ Sweet Black Waves by Kristina Pérez

I came across this book over on Instagram and I was immediately intrigued by it. When I was in London in September, at forbidden planet, I came across this signed hardcover edition and I just couldn’t resist! This is definite one I want to read next year.

◊ Contagion by Erin Bowman

I already started reading this book right after its release, when I received my copy of it, but in the end I just couldn’t get in the right mood to continue reading. Which really bummed me out, since this is one of my favorite genres to read; YA Sci-Fi. So I definitely want to read it in 2019, so its a perfect one to add to this list then.

◊ the Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara

This is a book I received for my birthday in September. It’s a book that I came across over at Goodreads one day and I loved the synopsis right away. I haven’t seen this book much on social media pages and what not and I love reading books that aren’t that hyped. Hopefully this is going to be one of those ‘hidden gems’ that I end up falling in love with.

◊ Evenfall by Gaja J. & Boris Kos

Another book with stunning Merwild cover art. I was so lucky to receive an (also signed by both authors) arc copy of this book by the authors. The synopsis of this one sounds so good. I already read a couple of chapters and I really liked it so far, but then I just fell into a slump or something because every book I picked up at the time was being put away again, including this one. I am going to start over in this one and finish it asap in 2019.

◊ Lullaby by L.R.W. Lee

I love discovering new-to-me authors, especially self published authors, since I believe there are so many gems hidden in the self-published book world. This is one of those books that lured me in with the stunning Charlie Bowater art cover and the synopsis. I can’t wait to read this book in 2019.

◊ the Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill

With the Little Mermaid being my all-time favorite fairy tale, the original one and the Disney version, I’m obsessed with everything Mermaids ever since I was a young girl. So of course, this re-telling had to be added to my collection. And this hardcover edition is so frigging stunning – the naked hardback is so beautiful as well – and the synopsis sounds great so I can’t wait to dive into this book, hopefully soon!

◊ Dating You/Hating You by Christina Lauren

A book I was really excited to read. I’ve had it on my shelves ever since it’s release but still haven’t gotten around to read it yet. I’ve picked it up once, but after reading a couple of pages I just wasn’t really in the mood to continue reading this book. Hopefully soon, in 2019.

◊ Consumed by J.R. Ward

A book I pre-order, with every intention of reading it asap but I still haven’t gotten around to pick it up yet. Bummer, since it’s about firefighters and I believe there’s also a mysterious story-line involved so I’m quite curious about it. So on the backlist tbr it is then haha.

◊ Becoming by Michelle Obama

I was planning on starting this book in December already and read it as an In-between-book but in the end I just never picked it up so I decided to put it on the Beat the backlist 2019 tbr then and read it in 2019.

◊ Kiss of the Royal by Lindsey Duga, Olympian Challenger by Astrid Arditi & Paper Girl by Cindy R. Wilson

These are e-arcs which I received so I could review them for the publishers. I haven’t gotten around to finish them yet, which really bums me out because I really liked what I’ve read of Kiss of the Royal and Olympian Challenger already and I’m really curious about Paper Girl. So I’m definitely planning on finishing these asap in 2019.

At the time of writing this article, begin December, I know there are also some  2018 released books I’ll be receiving for Christmas which I could’ve put on this list for example. But I decided to not include them yet, so I could focus on the books I already own at this very moment.

Are you participating in the Beat the Backlist 2019 challenge? If you’re not familiar with this challenge yet; you can read about it in my Intro article > HERE.

If you are participating; how many books are you adding to the list? Have you participated this year as well? How did it go? Love to hear from you and thank you, always, for reading!

With Love,
Melissa ♥

You’ve added some great books to your list. I really enjoyed reading Children of Blood and Bone and Furyborn. I am so curious about Michelle Obama’s book, so hopefully I’ll be able to read that one soon ❤
