In order to clean out my To Read list on Goodreads, I decided to give this a try by writing the Down the TBR Hole article. This article was originally created by Lost in a Story and a lot of other bloggers are publishing it as well so you might’ve already come across it here and there. I always like reading those Down the TBR Hole articles and hopefully you’ll like to read it over here on my blog as well.

Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
 Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if youre feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.

It’s really fun to see which books I’ve added to my to-read list so long ago and to find out how I feel about them now, 4 years later. Since I’ve only been using Goodreads actively since 2014, there aren’t any books I’ve added prior to 2014 obviously. So let’s see which books I get to start with in this first Down the TBR Hole article! Here we go!

a Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies (a Beautiful Dark #1)
Genre: Young adult, paranormal, angels
Added to GR in: September 2014

On the night of Skye’s seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye’s life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

This is a difficult one because it has a love triangle in it from what I gather and I don’t particularly like those unless they’re written by Cassandra Clare, lol. But it’s Angels and I love reading paranormal books that have Angels in them… But it sounds like a ‘dime in a dozen’ book, so I decided to not keep it after all, since there’s already so much I want to read for certain and I really need to be strict here.

Verdict ⇒ GO

the Hollow by Jessica Verday (the Hollow #1)
Genre: Young adult, paranormal, ghosts
Added to GR in: September 2014

A love like no other…

When Abbey’s best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead…and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen’s funeral and keeps reappearing in Abbey’s life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he’s the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again…but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen’s betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her – one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

I love reading YA horror books from time to time, and I always love everything regarding Sleepy Hollow. So coming across this one now – which I totally forgot about – makes me excited haha. It sounds creepy, it sounds mysterious and it sounds like there’s a bit of romance in it as well as friendship issues. Yes, I’d still very much like to find out what I’ll think of this book, even though I don’t care for its cover whatsoever brr, so:

Verdict ⇒ STAY

Die for Me by Amy Plum (Revenants #1)
Genre: Young adult, paranormal/fantasy
Added to GR in: September 2014

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier’s parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life–and memories–behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate’s guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he’s a revenant–an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

This still sounds like a fun read to me. I bought book 2 by accident instead of book 1 so I can’t start reading yet anytime soon. But I still really want to read it since a friend of mine liked this book and our tastes are often very similar. Have you read this trilogy? Love to hear from you!

Verdict ⇒ STAY

Inescapable by Amy A. Bartol (the Premonition #1)
Genre: Young adult, paranormal/fantasy, Angels
Added to GR in: September 2014

My name is Evie Claremont and this was to be the making of me–my freshman year of college. I’d been hoping that once I’d arrived on Crestwood’s campus, the nightmare that I’ve been having would go away. It hasn’t.
I may be an inexperienced seventeen-year-old, but I’m grounded…sane. I look for rational explanations to even the strangest circumstances. Since meeting sophomore Reed Wellington, however, nothing makes any sense. Whenever he’s near, I feel an attraction to him–a magnetic kind of force pulling me towards him. I know what you’re thinking…that sounds fairly awesome. Yeah, it would be…if he liked me, but Reed acts as if I’m the worst thing that has ever happened to Crestwood…or him. But get this, for some reason every time I turn around he’s there, barging into my life.
What is the secret that he’s keeping from me? I’m hoping that it’s anything but what I suspect: that he’s not exactly normal…and neither am I. So, maybe Crestwood won’t be the making of me, but it could be the breaking of me. I’ve been left to wonder if the dark future my dream is foretelling is…inescapable.

Meh, nope. This synopsis isn’t doing it for me anymore I think. Yet again, it feels like it has too much of the ‘standard’ ya tropes and even though I do like reading those books from time to time, I want to get rid of some of them because I know I don’t like having too much of those on my tbr anymore. So:

Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter (Shadow Falls #1)
Genre: Young adult, paranormal/fantasy, Vampires, Werewolves
Added to GR in: September 2014

Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.

Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

Okay, so even though this one seems to have a lot of YA standard issues going on like a love triangle for example, I can’t help feel like I still want to read it? haha. I mean; Half-fae characters and I also do like reading about werewolves as well… a Camp? Yeah, it sounds again like it’s something we’ve come across many times already but still. For now, I’ll keep it, I guess since I’ve heard some good things about this book. Love to hear from you though if you’ve read it already.

Verdict ⇒ STAY

Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare (the Last Hours #3)
Genre: Young adult, fantasy
Added to GR in: September 2014

I don’t have a synopsis for this one yet because it isn’t due to release until somewhere in 2021 haha. Here’s one for Chain of Gold though, the first book in this trilogy:

For as long as Lucie Herondale can remember, the Herondale family manor has adjourned the manor of the Blackthorns.

It’s too bad that Tatiana Blackthorn, the matriarch of the family, has always been, as her father Will Herondale says, “mad as a mouse trapped in a teapot.”

Since the day that her father Benedict murdered Tatiana’s husband, and was killed in turn by a group of Shadowhunters that included both her brothers, Tatiana has nursed a burning grudge against the London Institute and all its inhabitants, especially Will, Tessa and their children: Lucie and her brother, James…

Of course, there’s no frigging doubt about the fact that this one will stay on my tbr haha. This trilogy is one I’ve been looking forward to reading every since I first finished reading the Infernal Devices years ago. And from what I’ve read about some of the characters in novella’s so far as well, has me continuing obsessing about these books even more so. Book 1 in the trilogy, Chain of Gold, is set to release in 2019. I’m so exciiiiiited!

Out of these 6 books, 2 will GO and 4 will stay. So I think it’s a good start? Sure, I could’ve gotten rid of more books but still; I managed to get rid of 2. 2 books that otherwise would’ve remained on my tbr for God knows how long, without ever having the intention to read them in the future, lol.

Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, should I change anything about the choices I made, you think? Maybe I removed one you think I should put back on my tbr? Love to hear from you. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

With Love,
Melissa ♥

    1. thank you! I came across this article over at several blogs and thought it would be a good way to ‘clean out’ my Goodreads tbr haha. I totally forgot about some of these books, lol. They’ve been on the list since 2014 so that’s quite a while ago haha.

    1. haha yeah that’s why I wanted to do this article; to un-mess my GR tbr. It’s really effective, if you can make the hard cuts. I still doubt so much when deciding if I want to delete a book of my list or not, lol. But I’ll get there eventually haha.

    1. haha I know what you mean but with over 1500 books on my Goodreads tbr, I really need to DO something about it because this is just insane, lol. I’ll never be able to read them all so I better organize them and this article is a fun way to do it I guess xD

    1. It’s hard choosing haha but I mostly choose based on my mood/feelings on the book when reading the synopsis again. These have been on my to read list since 2014 and my reading tastes and what not have changed a bit since then so that helps getting rid of some of the books I think. My physical tbr – the books I have at home – is over 200 atm.. yikes! And the Goodreads want to read list is over 1500 and that’s the one I’m trying to organize now by writing this article.
